Friday, June 29: India / A Dramatic Peace
We finished out our week of Camp with a trip to India. Our special guest was Mr. John Protopapas and his children Helena and Yiorgo. We made and flew kites, tasted samosas and drank lassi, heard a puppet story, tried yoga, and listened to Mr. John perform on the sitar and tabla drums. In the afternoon, Mrs. Michelle Fogel shared peace stories and helped us with working-together activities. We also performed a peace folktale.
Thursday, June 28: Turkey / Global Games
Today we took a trip to Turkey with Mrs. Oyku Ak and Ceyda Sablak. We made a typical wall hanging, tasted cherry juice and ate Turkish snacks, played a fun game called STOP, and listened to folktales about Nesreddin Hoca.
In the afternoon, we played lots of games from all over the world!
Wednesday, June 27: Egypt / Refugee Awareness
Today we visited Egypt with Mrs. Diana Abdelshahid. She told us all about her country, we made Seega boards and played Seega, we played tug-of-war (without a rope!), tasted a typical Egyptian snack, and listened to a folktale. Diana is a student at Millersville International House’s Intensive Academic English program.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Barbara Witmer of Church World Service Immigration and Refugee program, shared activities about what it's like for children who need to leave their homes and countries.
Tuesday, June 26: Peru / African Drumming and Dance
Camp continued today with Mrs. Ynes Carmona-Gonzalez, her sons Bryan and Raul and her niece Ingrid sharing about Peru. They told about their country, we made llama (pronounced zhama, not lama) wall hangings, played a running game with the Quechua language, tasted purple corn drink and ate corn nuts, heard a folktale about how the cactus got its spines, and watched and performed the Huaylash dance.
In the afternoon, Ayana Pereira and Chi Mann-McFarlane of the Imani Edu-Tainers taught us songs and dances from West Africa.
Monday, June 25: Sweden / Spanish 101
Camp got underway with a visit to Sweden with Mr. Anton Oberg and his daughters Anja and Eleanor. He told us about his country, we made and tried out reindeer lassos, tasted lingonberry juice and ginger cookies, listened to Mr. Anton tell stories, and sang along with him as he played Swedish music on his guitar.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Heather Solomon of Fluent Kids taught us the basics of Spanish with games and fun!
