Country Spotlight

Friday, June 20

We finished our week by "visiting" Myanmar (Burma) with Mosez Saw, who told us about his country, dressed in a typical outfit, and taught us games. We also tasted sticky rice with coconut, made our own facial sunscreen designs, played games, and heard a folktale. Session 2 campers Zu Bai, Monica, and RaMaTuLa helped Mosez with his presentation. Session 1 campers were privileged this week to have Jill Neuman as their travel guide each morning, sharing information about the destination of the day and travel tips.

In our Extras sessions, we put together disaster relief kits with Mennonite Central Committee, and studied French 101 with teacher Jessica Martin.

Thursday, June 19

We continued our trip around the world with a "visit" to Hawaii with Ronni Sakamoto. She told us about the islands where she grew up, we tasted haupia, rice crackers, and mango juice, made leis, and tried hula.

In our Extras sessions, we learned about hunger in the world and ways to help those who do not have enough food, with Norma Good of Heifer International, and played more Global Games.

Wednesday, June 18

Today we headed to Italy with Dana Stucchi of La Dolce Vita Italian Bakery. We played several games (fratelli and marejapiedi, bocce, and morra), designed our own fashionable bags, listened to two folktales, danced the Tarantella, and tasted fabulous cookies and Italian soda from her restaurant.

In our Extras sessions, we tried Taekwondo with John Hayes (for classes, call 717-572-4390), and watched Kids and Cultures’ own Really Big Field Trip DVD.

We thank our Camp volunteers, without whom we could not run this Camp: Sheri Brooks (co-founder of Camp and director of Destinations), Andrew Gehman, Bethany Holler, Jamie Barrett, Carey Bustard, Medoza Ameen, Ian Sanchez, Aritoza Ameen, Olivia Beiler, Thea Federoff, Matt Malcolm, Beth Lloyd, Susan Shiner, Colin Shiner, Tyler Shiner, Susana Troop, Jenn Knepper, and Dan Snyder. Thank you!

Tuesday, June 17

Today we "visited" South Africa with John Protopapas and his son Yiorgo. They told us about the country where John grew up and Yiorgo has visited. We made and played thumb pianos, with recycled pieces of street sweeper tines. We tasted scones and tea, played a cattle-herding game with stones, and watched a video of South African dancers.

Our Extras activities today were Hula Happiness with Mika Cox McDougall and Study Abroad with Akilah Craig, an F&M student from Trinidad and Tobago who has also studied in Germany.

We also had a visit from WGAL-8; watch the evening news on Wednesday evening to see a segment about Camp!

Monday, June 16

We kicked off Camp today with a "visit" to Venezuela with Jose Urdaneta and his daughter Alvia as our guests. Campers heard about what it's like to grow up in Venezuela; made and played maracas; tasted plantain chips, guava paste, and mango juice; heard stories about Uncle Tiger and Uncle Rabbit; and played a Venezuelan game. Today's Extras sessions included Beijing and Beyond with Hui-Ling Singer and Global Games with Dan Snyder.

We also had a visit from CBS-21, and were on the evening news around 5:40 p.m.
