Camp Memories 2010
Check back each evening through June 25 for photos of Kids and Cultures Camp 2010.
June 25, 2010: Haiti
Today we finished our week of Camp with a visit to Haiti with our guest Daniel, who told us about his childhood in Haiti. He talked with us about schools, foods, animals, and language. We made and raced bottle cars, tasted sugar cane, answered riddles, heard a folktale, and carried buckets of water on our heads. Daniel talked a bit about the recent earthquake and the work that is being done to rebuild.

June 24, 2010: Syria
Today we traveled to Syria with our guest family Firas, Valerie, Charlie, Andrew, and Uncle Nihad Dib. We went on a slideshow tour of Syria and the capital city of Damascus. For craft we made mosaic picture frames and erased pictures to go in them. We played a childhood game called 5 stones, and danced a Syrian dance with Firas and his family. For snack we tasted Hummus, Pita Bread, Tabbouli, Rice Pudding, and a Pineapple Drink from Syria. We also had a surprise visit from Firas' sister and niece, Renda and Layal, who were streamed live from Syria via internet connection!

June 23, 2010: Philippines
Today we traveled to the Philippines where our guest Gayda gave us some pointers on how to get around in her country. We learned about how the flag can be switched directions depending on if the country is in war or if it's a peaceful time. We also learned how to make gupit-gupit, or cut-cut, which is a craft made from cutting, scoring, and bending a single piece of paper. We tried Champorado, a sticky rice pudding, and Sago't Gulaman, a drink made from caramelized sugar, water, tapioca, and cubed jelly. We also played Patintero, a fun game played by children in the Philippines. Some kids also got a chance to try tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance.

Today we traveled to Ecuador in South America, with our special guest Charito, who talked with us about what it's like to grow up in her country. We sang songs, played instruments, made shakers and guaguas (bread people), tried two games, tasted humitas and drank a special fruit drink, "crossed" the equator, and saw beautiful outfits that some people wear on special occasions. Charito is the author of Navidad latinoamericana / Latin American Christmas.
