Report of First Trip

Finland. Indonesia. Cyprus. Côte d'Ivoire. Chile. For most Americans, these countries are just names on a map, and perhaps only occasionally mentioned in the news.

Kids and Cultures sponsored a bus trip from Lancaster, Pa., to Embassy Row in Washington, DC, on Monday, September 29, for 39 children, parents, and other interested individuals. The trip included visits to the embassies of the five countries mentioned above, lunch at an authentic Moroccan restaurant, and other educational activities to help participants put faces, facts, and experiences with the names of these countries.

At each embassy, a representative of that country gave a short presentation about his or her country to help the participants gain an awareness of what life is like for children in that country, followed by questions and answers, and in some cases, a tour of the embassy.

What Others Are Saying...

"The thing I appreciate the most is that now I have faces and real people that I can recall whenever I read about Chile, Cyprus, Indonesia, Cote d'Ivoire, and Finland. These places are no longer just flat outlines on a map." Julie Snavely, Lititz, Pa.

"The entire day was awesome and very educational. We appreciated the videos and games on the bus, instead of a 'mindless movie'. The variety of activities and the kids' notebook were nice extras." The Flynn family, Mohnton, Pa.
