February 2005
Hello friends of Kids and Cultures,
Happy February!
We've had a busy start to the new year. On Saturday, January 8, we were the featured co-hosts of the Kids Cookie Break, a children's radio show on WJTL, FM90.3 in the Lancaster, Pa., area. We had the opportunity to talk on air about Kids and Cultures, share some fun international music and information, and give away some prizes. We thank WJTL for their support.
We kicked off our new show A World of Sillies on January 13 at Ross Elementary School with more than 150 children and adults. In addition to the stories, attendees tasted food from five different countries, heard silly children's music from around the world, and played international games. Door prizes included restaurant gift certificates to ethnic restaurants, atlases, music, puzzles, and games. Congratulations to Medoza Hama, the grand prize winner of a free performance of A World of Sillies. We thank our sponsors who donated to this event: Giant Foods, Cocina Mexicana, 88 China Express, Barnes and Noble, and Ten Thousand Villages.
Kids and Cultures and the Wenger family matched the $188.75 contributed for Tsumani Relief that we received by our January 21 deadline, for a total contribution of $377.50. We forwarded the money to UNICEF. Visit www.unicef.org to see how the funds are being used, learn about "forgotten" world emergencies, and to contribute directly.
We've also put together a storytelling show Who Outsmarted the Czar? and other tales of daring deeds from Old Russia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. This "new" show is an adaptation of some of the Treasures of the World stories interwoven with additional stories of adventure from around the world. We've prepared Who Outsmarted the Czar? specifically for the Pennsylvania libraries' 2005 summer reading program theme: Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds. Please contact your local library to recommend this show for the summer programming.
