July/August 2003

Dear friends,
SUMMER EVENTS
The summer in the northern hemisphere is about half over already. As a family, we've attended several cross-cultural events, and there's at least one big one yet to come!
First, there was the June 6 Ten Thousand Villages International Children's Day, with African drummers and dancers, crafts, and real live silk worms. On July 5, we visited the Capital Children's Museum in Washington, DC, where we had a blast at a Mexican beach and town, and visited a Japanese house, train, and classroom (see this month's feature at www.KidsAndCultures.com to learn more about this museum). The next week we hung out at Global Fair (held at Lancaster Mennonite School) for several hours, enjoying food from Hungary and Honduras, and learning how to weave Guatemalan style. We attended an Iguanas concert--lively "TexMex" music at Long's Park on July 13.This past week we ate--and were entertained by the chefs--at Tokyo Diner, where our favorite new food was eel sushi. Check out some photos of our summer adventures at our website: www.KidsAndCultures.com.
The biggest local cross-cultural event is yet to come: LancasterFest will be held in downtown Lancaster on Saturday, August 9. See you there! By the way, Kids And Cultures is the sponsor of the www.LancasterFest.com domain name.

Timm has been busy putting together a website for our artist friend, Sadradeen Ameen, whose primitive, childlike, and whimsical art is well-known in the Middle East and Europe. How did we meet? Sadradeen's daughter Aritoza was in Katia's first grade class this year. The family is from Iraq, and moved to the U.S. in 2001. Although the website is not finished yet, check out his work at www.sadradeen.com.

Until next month,

Timm, Kristina, Katia, and Thaniel Wenger
