LOOKING SOUTH: The Event
We thank everyone who came out for Looking South: A Fundraising and Cultural Awareness Event to Help Families Respond to Hurricane Katrina on Monday evening, September 19, at Ross Elementary School in Lancaster, Pa. In addition to music from The Dixielanders and folktales from the affected region, attendees created a Mardi Gras craft, learned about life in the Deep South from "Sissy Boudreaux" (aka Heather Miller), tasted a Southern snack (including pork rinds, Mississippi Mud Cake, and pickled okra), made cards to send to victims of the hurricane, and donated to the American Red Cross. Approximately 150 people attended the event, during which we raised $350 for the American Red Cross, and created 45 cards to be sent to children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Turkey Hill, Giant, The Dixielanders, Lancaster Public Library, and Ross Elementary are among those who volunteered their time, talents, and resources to make this event a success! To see photos of the event, visit www.KidsAndCultures.com.
LOOKING SOUTH: The School Assembly
Kids and Cultures has put together a 45-minute Looking South school assembly that features a trivia game show to help students learn about the geography and cultures of the region; interactive folktales from the region, including background information about the Native American, Creole, and Cajun peoples; and information about emergency preparedness. We are currently seeking corporate sponsors to allow us to provide this assembly for schools. For more information, visit www.KidsAndCultures.com.
CULTURES OF THE WORLD CLUB: Next Stop--Cuba
In September, the Club "visited" Appalachia, USA, including special dulcimer music (thanks to the Brooks family). On October 4, Club members will "visit" Cuba, with a special guest who was born and raised in Cuba! Club meets at 6:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Millersville International House. For more information and to pre-register (required), visit www.KidsAndCultures.com.
DUTCH WONDERLAND: International Days
On September 24, Kids and Cultures sponsored an activity booth and performed A World of Sillies for Dutch Wonderland's guests. We welcome the new e-newsletters subscribers we met that day and thank the Derksen family for helping out.
SPOTLIGHT: Cultural Profile Project
Do you want to learn about the people of another country? Visit http://www.cp-pc.ca/english/, Canada's Cultural Profile Project, which highlights the climate, food, holidays, arts, and spirituality (to name only a few aspects) of more than 100 countries. The site was designed to help Canadians welcome immigrants from those countries, which we think is a very hospitable gesture. Check it out!
OCTOBER'S OFFER: Three Free Shows (Enter today!)
Kids and Cultures is giving away three free performances and seven $50-off vouchers for daytime school assemblies. Visit
