Quotes from Participants

“The [Mini-trips] have been a highlight for my family this past year. The Wenger family is extremely effective in helping children of all ages appreciate other cultures. With talent and organization, they present various cultures via stories, songs, games, food, and objects (clothing, instruments, toys, handcrafts) native to each country. Stations are used as a hands-on approach to learning about a country’s language, alphabet, animals, art, customs, or daily chores. Being exposed to other cultures in such an informative, creative, hands-on way helps participants to be more comfortable with people from those cultures. With the growing cultural diversity in the United States, Kids and Cultures programs give an immunization against racism that will benefit all involved.” Lori Longenecker, mother of four, Lititz, Pa.

“We so enjoy the Kids and Cultures programs that we cannot keep quiet! Stories from around the world broaden the view of all who hear them. Hearing the words, seeing the pictures and items, playing the games and making the crafts as well as smelling and tasting food from different cultures help to make different parts of the world come alive. These activities can also help encourage acceptance of people and ways that differ from personal family traditions. I believe this is important since our country is a blend of people from many backgrounds. I have observed a bond developing on several levels: storytellers to children, storytellers to adults, children to each other, adults to each other, and between families. It seems that a community is being built, providing a safe environment to learn, ask questions, and experience different cultures. For my family and my friends, this has been priceless!” Sherry Kauffman, mother of two, Lititz, Pa.
