Cultures of the World Club for Families Seeks Travelers

(Lancaster, Pa.) Families with elementary school children can travel the globe again this school year without leaving Lancaster County. Kids and Cultures, an educational non-profit organization based in Lancaster, is presenting nine Cultures of the World Club sessions for families. Each month families can attend a 75-minute club session that focuses on one country or culture. Together, families will learn about the geography and climate, learn interesting facts (details about the people, animals, and/or historical significance), play a game, hear a folktale, make a related craft, and taste a snack from the featured country or culture.

Destinations include Kenya, Afghanistan, India, Puerto Rico, China, Brazil, Finland, Turkey, and Mali. The Camp will be held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Millersville International House (MIH), 321 Manor Avenue, Millersville, Pa. Families can sign up for "The World Tour" to visit all nine destinations or pick and choose "A La Carte" one or more destinations they would like to visit.
The concept for the Cultures of the World Club for Families came in part from the successful week-long summer day camps that Kids and Cultures has co-sponsored with MIH the past three summers. “We designed the Club to extend cultural learning throughout the year for the families of campers and for other interested families,” says Timm Wenger, who with his wife Kristina, are founders of Kids and Cultures. A dozen families, from as far away as York and Mohnton, participated in last year’s Club series.

Abby Legaspi, who traveled from York with her husband and four children to attend last year’s series of Club sessions, recommends the Cultures of the World Club for Families. “Each meeting was a highlight of the month for our family. In addition to learning basic facts about each country, we grew in understanding of the similarities we share with people of other cultures, and the differences in our food, toys, games, and lifestyles that reflect our different environments and histories. Our children left each meeting enthusiastic about what they had learned and already anticipating the next one.”

The Club meets monthly from September to May and pre-registration is required. Complete registration information is available at www.KidsAndCultures.com or by calling 717-290-6948. Kids and Cultures also presents interactive storytelling shows including Treasures of the World, AnimalWhys, Why Why Why in the World?, CELEBRATE! World Holidays for Kids, and A World of Sillies. Their presentations feature folktales from around the world and are appropriate for school assemblies, scout groups, and other children’s events.
